Meet and Greet…

Well… hello, all!

So, I just came across something very awesome – GUTGAA (Gearing Up to Get an Agent) hosted by Deana Barnhart.  I was pretty nervous to sign up (which I just did yesterday) but thought, “Hm.  Well, I do want an agent… And I do want to meet other writers like me… So, what do I have to lose?”  So, I signed up!

I’m so glad (excited and nervous still) to participate in the bloghop.  Go here to see everyone who is participating.  This is going to be so much fun! 🙂

So, a little about me…

I am 29-years old (often mistaken for 18) and the mother of a fearless (except for bees), acrobatic 2-year old girl. I write fantasy (mostly YA paranormal romance) and am currently querying my novel TERRA INCOGNITA to agents… not going so well yet.  I studied art (with a mix of art history and creative writing) in college and love drawing scenes and characters from my own stories.  I’m a progressively worsening klutz and always hurting myself… and I like baking, storms, rainbows, and photography.

And now, to answer the “Meet and Greet” questions:

Where do you write?  Wherever I can… I always carry a notebook (various sizes) with me.  At home, I have two main places.  If I really need quiet and solitude to focus, I lock myself in the little office I have set up in my bedroom.  But, mostly, I sit in the living room, on the couch, while my 2-year old watches Nick, Jr.

Quick. Go to your writing space, sit down and look to your left. What is the first thing you see?  There is a cat on my kitchen table.  A very large, sleeping cat.  If he gets any larger, he will have to diet. I know, very unsanitary… but it beats the times when there are two cats sleeping on said table.

Favorite time to write? First thing in the morning (because it’s often the first thing I think about) after feeding my daughter, my animal friends, and myself… OR late at night, when I feel more creative.

Drink of choice while writing? Definitely water… which, most of the time, I forget is even there.  If it’s cold out, I might drink hot cocoa or tea… Mmm… I’m ready for cold weather.

When writing , do you listen to music or do you need complete silence?  I do better with silence when writing (can only listen to music when working on visual art) though I am getting much better at writing with Nick, Jr. on the TV.  🙂  Music, however, is a must for inspiration before I write.

What was your inspiration for your latest manuscript and where did you find it?  My dreams are most often my inspiration, as with my first manuscript… but music has recently been inspiring my work… My latest idea (I’m only just beginning the research phase) was partially inspired by a song called “I Believe in You” by Don Williams, specifically by the line “I believe in magic.”  It made me think of romance, magic, and cowboys (since the song is an older country song)… and the rest is top secret, for now.  🙂

What’s your most valuable writing tip?  Well, there are so many great writing tips out there… so I’ll stick with the most basic.  Make time to write when/wherever you can.  Keep pen and paper with you at all times.  That way you’re always ready.  When inspiration (or boredom) strikes, write!  Eh, it’s obvious but valuable… I think.

There you have it!  Now hop on over to another blog on the list!
Thanks for stopping by!

  1. There is nothing wrong with looking 11 years younger! Rock it while you can!

  2. We’re the same age. Sometimes, writing alone in my house, I forget just how many people like me are out there. To be 29 and mistaken for 18 is a great place to be, I think. I wish I could say the same for myself.

You know this whole GUTGAA thing makes me all kinds of nervous too, but I figure it can’t hurt. Good luck.

Oh yeah, I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you how awesome your background is.

  3. Your writing tip is simple, but so true. If inspiration strikes and I have no pen or paper I want to cry. My friend had to drive me out to a CVS at NESCBWI 2011 because I forgot to bring a notebook to take notes with and jot ideas down. Good luck with GUTGAA!

  4. Don’t be nervous. I’ve found that writers, especially for kids and young adults are some of the friendliest, most encouraging people there are. Glad you decided to sign up! Welcome to GUTGAA and I hope you land an agent. I figure the more rejections you get, the closer you are to success. After all, J.K. Rowling and Dr. Seuss had stacks of rejections too!

  5. Hello! I write YA Paranormal too. It’s a hard one to break into. Nice to meet you.

  6. I too, have learned the art of writing with the wonderful sounds of talking penguins and shrieking kids in the backgroung. 😉 Your top secret story sounds very interesting. Love cowboys! Happy GUTGAA!

  7. Glad you decided to join! Good luck!!

  8. I wish I could be mistaken for 18. But that was long ago. I do get carded for liquor periodically. I like that, but it’s not happening as often anymore. 🙂

  9. Good luck with GUTGAA.

  10. Ahh, you are so my kind of person! I too often forget my drinks when I’m writing, and I do love it when the weather gets cold so I can have hot chocolate again! 😀

  11. I’m sorry to be so late on the GUTGAA meet and greet. As always, life exploded into chaos when I thought things would calm down. Well, can’t be helped. I’d have a hot chocolate too if it weren’t for the high amount of suggar.

    • I’m probably a sugar-addict so…. I can’t stay away! I didn’t know about GUTGAA until the night before the meet and greet, so I’m definitely behind. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by and good luck!

  12. Doing a last round of GUTGAA Meet & Greet… My cat sleeps on my kitchen table too, there seems to be nothing I can do to stop her. Enjoy GUTGAA, it’s nice to meet you!

    • Hi! I’m behind on my rounds, I’m afraid… I suppose there’s nothing anyone can do to stop a cat from doing something once s/he has the mind to… 🙂 Thanks for stopping by! Good luck!

  13. Saying hello from GUTGAA….I also love to bake…and i like the background for your blog. Very mystical yet inviting at the same time.

  14. I love chubby kitties! Nice to meet you!

  15. Hiya! Still making the rounds of meet and greet LOL I have a fat cat. A messy, purring, shedding, bossy fat cat. Probably why I love him so much LOL Oh and two Chihuahua I lovingly refer to as rats on acid.

Nice to see you and I’ll head up and give you my impressions of your query!

  16. I totally relate to being mistaken for someone much younger as an adult, though it’s been awhile since someone took me for THAT much younger. So many times i felt tempted to ask these people who thought I was all of 12 years old as a legal adult if they’d ever seen a 12-year-old with such a large chest. Even if I have a young-looking face, the proof of my adult maturity should’ve been staring them right in the face!
